Budapest Castle

The Castle Hill of Budapest is one and half kilomters long and about half that in widdth. It is over 180 metres above the Danube and from here you will get great panoramic views of Budapest while also enjoying much that this spectacular area of Budapest has to offer. The castle hill area of Budapest has always been inhabited. A large settlement was form in the early 13th century when King Bela IV ordered a castle to be constructed to halt the invasion of the Tartars and this is where he located his throne. As a result of the protection that this area gave, many of the royal court moved to this area of the city. The castle wall was continually strengthened and the invasion of the Tartars was squashed in 1285.

By the first decade of the 15th century the Budapest castle became one of the most powerful castles in Europe. King Matthias (1458-1490) made huge efforts to redecorate the castle and establish it is a center of creative excellence however the golden age of castle ended with his death. In 1541 the Turks invaded Hungary and their 150 rule started. The Turks continued the development and fortification of the castle albeit they did not pay too much attention to the conservation of the castle. During the siege of the United Christian forces, the buildings were destroyed in 1703. The Castle became truly prominent with the Hapsburg rule in the 18th century. In 1873 Pest, Buda and Obuda United and the new capital of Budapest was formed.

During the second world war, all buildings were destroyed, the Royal Palace was sadly burnt out. After the war the Palace was rebuilt and the buildings renovated bit by bit. Due to the natural beauty of the city, the Castle Hill is still the most remarkable sight to be seen in Budapest.

 

The Streets of Castle Hill are the most likely walking areas of the people. A town from the Middle Ages, intimate little streets, old houses, street lamps and wonderful relics.

There are also several museums located in the castle grounds, the National Gallery Budapest, The Ludwig Museum Budapest, the Museum of military history, Hungarian Museum of catering, Jewish Tabernacle from the Middle ages. The Telephone Museum, the Museum of music and the National Szchenyi Library is also located here. All in all there is a lot to do and see in the Castle Hill area of Budapest.
