Budapest Heroes Square

Heroes square is located next to City Park and is the biggest sqaure in Budapest.  It lies at the end of Andrássy Avenue (with which it comprises part of a World Heritage site), next to City Park. It is surrounded by two important buildings, the Museum of Fine Arts on the left and Palace of Art (or Art Exhibition Museum) on the right. There is a single column which sticks out on top of which is a bronze statue of Archangel Gabriel, erected to commerorate the 1000th anniversary of the Magyar settlement (1986), however it was not fully finished until 1929 when the sqaure was finally named. At the base of this there are some statues of some of the most memorable personalities of Hungarian History. These include the following,

  • Stephen I of Hungary / Ladislaus I of Hungary / Coloman of Hungary / Andrew II of Hungary / Béla IV of Hungary  / Charles I of Hungary / Louis I of Hungary János Hunyadi / Matthias Corvinus of Hungary / István Bocskay / Gabriel Bethlen / Imre Thököly / Francis II Rákóczi / Lajos Kossuth
